Boy, 17, arrested after three people injured at Sheffield school | UK news

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were injured at a Sheffield secondary school in a sharps incident, South Yorkshire Police said.

The force said the boy was taken into custody following reports of three people injured at Birley Academy on Wednesday morning.

It added: “Officers are at the scene after responding to reports of a sharps incident at the school on Birley Lane at around 8.50am. Two adults were treated at the scene for minor injuries. A child was also checked after an assault.

“A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.”

In an email from the school to parents shared with the BBC, head teacher Vicky Hall said there had been an “incident” but that “all staff and pupils are safe”.

Speaking from the school, Sophie Jones told reporters she received a text message from her daughter saying the school was “on lockdown, the lights are out, the doors are locked and she’s hiding under her desk. It was really scary.

I asked if he was joking because it seemed like a really surreal situation. She told me that he has been fine since then and I am quite relieved that he is safe.

Another woman came straight from work after her son alerted her to the incident.

“He said ‘if you know what’s going on or you’ve seen on social media, just know I’m safe, there’s a lockdown,'” she said.

“I’ll feel better once I see him, under these circumstances you’re always going to worry, even when the school tells you your child is fine.”

A school spokesman said: “We have closed this morning as a precaution following an incident at the school. This was not a decision taken lightly, but the safety of students and staff is paramount.

“All students and staff are safe. We are working closely with the police and will update soon.”
